Winter Week of the Young Child

Witch Hat
Cut out triangular shapes from black material to represent a witch hat. Let the children decorate the hats with glitter and foil.

Spider Webbing
Provide children with a chair and some yarn or string. Ask them to create a spiders web by wrapping the string around the legs of the chair.

Play some waltzes and have the children dance to the music.

shake and wiggle to music. Get your wiggles out!!!

Witch Match
You may be able to find witch stickers or Halloween stickers. Make sure that you have at least two identical sheets. Place two identical stickers on one index card. One on the left side and one on the right. Then cut the card in half in a funny shape. Follow with all the stickers. Then set out the cards and ask the child to pick out one, then find it's match. Next, place the cards together. My son loves this one!!!

Spider Walk
Have the children do a spider walk, by placing their hands and feet on the floor and lifting their bottom off the floor.

Spider Walk Race
Have the children race each other while walking like a spider. Or try a relay race.

Pretend to be a Witch
Provide your children with brooms, stuffed black cats, hats, and a box for a brew bowl. Allow the children to have fun pretending to be a witch.

Witches Broom Art
Supply the children with a broom, a large piece of butcher paper and some paint. Tape the paper on the floor and add the paint. Have the children use the broom to paint the paper. You may want to have the children take off shoes and socks, and roll up long pants... this is REALLY MESSY!!!

Spider Web Marble Painting
Place a piece of black paper in a box, supply the children with a few marbles covered in white paint. Place the marbles in the box and have the child shake the box to make a spider web. Please be careful when using marbles with small children, as they are a choking hazard.

Gummi Worm Jar
For older children. Fill a small jar with Gummi Worms. Ask each child to guess how many Gummi Worms are in the jar. For younger children, limit the number of Gummi Worms to less than ten. Record each child's guess. Count the Gummi Worms.

Provide three identical jars with pre-counted Gummi Wormsof 20, 30, and 40. Label these jars 20, 30 and 40. Place 20 to 40 Gummi Worms in a fourth identical jar. Allow the children to examine all four jars before they guess. Record the children's approximations. Count the Gummi Worms

Watermelon Seeds
Allow the children to glue the seeds from a watermelon to a piece of paper.
Variation: Let the children glue the seeds to red paper shaped like a watermelon.
Variation: Have the children tear bits of black paper to represent the seeds.
Variation: Have the children color the outer rim of a paper plate green and the inside red or pink. Glue on paper seeds or real seeds.

Fingerprint Watermelons
Supply the children with black non toxic ink pads and red watermelon shaped paper. Show the child how to make fingerprints on the paper, using only one finger at a time. Their fingerprints will represent the seeds.

Watermelon Seed Shakers
Take two sturdy paper plates. (The stronger the better)Place some seeds on one of the plates and place the other plate on top of the first so that both eating surface areas are facing each other. Use masking tape to seal the plates together. Have your child decorate with markers, glitter, construction paper, or ribbons. When dry, shake. Shake to music, shake it each time you take a step. Shake, Shake Shake!!!

Count the Watermelon seeds
Have your child try to guess how many seeds will be in their slice of watermelon. Let the child eat the watermelon and count them. How close was he/she? Write down your child's guess.. and how many seeds that were in the slice. The next day repeat the process. Compare your results. Were there more, less, or the same amount of seeds in the two slices.

Watermelon Hop
Place watermelon shapes on the floor. Have the children hop from one shape to the next.

Watermelon Seat Markers
Cut out and laminate big watermelon shapes to be used as seat markers for the children to sit on during story and circle time.

W Stamps
Let the children use W stamps or sponges to create an art project.

W Collage
Have the children cut the letter W from magazines and glue them onto a piece of paper.

W Collage
Cut out many W shapes from construction paper. Have the children cut Ws of magazines and glue them to the letter.

Glue Letters
Place glue on a piece of paper in the shape of a W. Have the children place glitter, colored rice or koolaid on the glue.

Contact Paper Art

You will need an image of the letter W. Place the image on the table and place a piece of contact paper, sticky side up over the image. Supply the children with scraps of construction paper to tissue paper. Children use the scraps to create the image on the contact paper.

Letter Art
Place masking tape on a piece of finger painting paper to create the letter W. Allow the child to paint the picture. After the paint had dried remove the tape.

Cotton Letters
Place glue on a piece of paper in shape of a W. Have the children place cotton balls on the paper.

Letter Rubbings 
Cut the letter W from paper doilys or sandpaper. Tape these letters to the table. Have the children place a piece of thin white paper over the letters and rub a crayon over the letter.

Wallpaper W's
Cut a W shape out of construction paper. Have the children decorate the W with squares of wallpaper.

Wormy Fun
Add plastic worms to your sand table.

Worm Race or Dance
Have the children pretend they are worms and slide around on the floor. You could play music and have them move to the music or have a worm race.

Worm Shaped Lacing Card
Alternately, a water drop, a walrus, watermelon, a whale or wagon.
Cut your shape out of tagboard and punch holes evenly spaced around the edges. The children practice lacing with a shoe lace or yarn.

A worm in my apple? 
Cut out one apple shape per child. Have them use a hole punch to punch about 4 holes in the apple. Have them weave a brown piece of yarn in the holes. Them have them glue on a stem.

Worm Art 
This one is a lot of fun, and has great results. Set out a piece of yarn for each color of paint you intend to use. Have the child dip the yarn in one color of paint, and run it across the paper. Use a new piece of string for a different color. For the brave... dip real worms in paint, and let them crawl across the paper. Be sure to wash them off and return them to their environment. (They usually survive.)

Players sit in a circle and pass a ball quickly around the circle. If a player misses the ball they are out, but if it was a bad pass the passer is out. The original game would have the children eliminated one by one, an ECE modification would be to have the child sit out for one round in the middle of the circle until the next child takes their place.


Alphabet Pretzels
Make your own pretzels and shape them like Ws.

Alphabet rolls
Shape roll or biscuits into the letter W before baking.

Alphabet Cookies
Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe to make the dough. Use a W shaped cookie cutter, bake. When cool decorate as desired.

Wafers, Waffles, Waffle Cones, Whitefish, watermelon, gummy worms

Whistle Game
Have all the children line up and make a train. Instruct the children that one short whistle means stop and two short whistles means go slowly. If they do well with the two signals add more, three whistles mean back up, 1 long whistle, stop and turn around etc.

Wet Sand
You will need two similar containers. Measure out 1/2 cup of sand add to each container, add 1/4 cup of water to each. Place one container in the sun and one in the shade. Ask the children what will happen to the sand.

Wet or Dry
Cut some pictures from a magazine, or show some pictures from a book, ask your child if the objects are wet or dry?

Nature Walk
Go out for a nature walk. Have each child pack a sack lunch in their backpack. Walk to the park or some place where you can eat lunch. Have a picnic.

You will need two identical ziplock bags. Place shortening inside one of the bags, then turn the second bag inside out and place inside the first bag. Seal the first and second bags together. Spread the shortening out inside the bags so that it forms an even layer. Next, fill a container with ice cold water. Have a child put one hand in the bag, then in the water, and their other hand in the water. Can they feel the difference. The fat will protect their hand from the cold water.

Line Walk
Place a line of masking tape on your floor. Have your child walk on the line. Try it backwards, hopping or try it your own way.

Car Wash
Fun for summer hot days. There are two ways you can do this. First is let your child help you wash your car, or you can set up a bucket with wash water, and one for rinsing and let your child wash some of their toy cars.

Painting with Water
You just need a paint brush, and water in a bucket, oh yeah, and a nice warm summer day. Let your child "paint" with the water, and watch how the water evaporates in the warm sun. Paint rocks, trees, the sidewalk anything!!!

Wrap it up
Let your child wrap a small box in tissue paper or gift wrap. Let them pretend to give it to someone.

Washing Dishes
My son fights with me every time I go to wash the dishes. He loves to pretend he's washing the dishes, or he will wipe the dishes with a soapy towel, or he likes to rinse to the dishes.

Paint the Wood
If you have scrap wood around, help your child use a hammer and nails to make a wood sculpture. Allow them to sand their work, and paint it.

Waffle blocks 
Provide a child with a waffle block, paint and a piece of paper, and have the child dip the waffle block in the paint and press onto the paper.

In a pie tin, place 3 to 5 teaspoon sized portions of different colored tempera paint evenly spaced about the area. Supply the children with washable toy wagons that have wheels that roll. Have the children dip the wheels in the paint and roll across the paper.

Train Whistles:
Supply each child with an empty plastic soda bottle. Invite the children to decorate the bottle however they wish. With stickers or glue on paper etc. To make the whistle sound, blow across the bottle's opening. Have the children blow all at once and pretend to be a train.

Riding Toy Wheel Art
Best done outside, on a mild day. Have children ride a tricycle or other riding toy on white paper. Place a little paint on the paper where they will start, or paint the tires.

Water Day (outside fun)
Children bring in bathing suit, towel, super soakers, water toys and sunscreen
Provide the children with sprinklers to play in.
Spray the kids gently with the hose.
Provide buckets and paint brushes for the children to paint with water.
Bring the water table outside
Provide the children with filled water balloons to throw at each other. It is best to do this in an area that is not used by younger children, as the remains of balloons can become a chocking hazard.
Have the children bring in super soakers and have a water fight.
Supply the children with sponges and buckets of water to have a sponge fight.
Organize a car wash.

Wheels Day
Have the children bring in bikes, scooters, skates, or skateboards to ride around. We blocked off our parking lot to allow the children to use this space for riding, we had a circular drive that worked great. Be sure parent's include protective gear as well.
